A message from Laura Murphy - your Lib Dem Candidate for North Thanet

Next Thursday will be your chance to do something different. You and I know that the fears being peddled of chaos in the country if there is a hung Parliament are a nonsense. With the economy in such a parlous state the parties need to work together to get out of the mess that we're in today. Vince Cable and the team have done a very good job so far in identifying savings, over £15 billion of savings. It's only a start though which we acknowledge and we still have some hard choices to make to get the country back on track financially. Choices which need to be supported by you in order for it to work.
And yes, you also have the chance to do something really different.
We've had 65 years of a blue-red government. A YouGov poll showed that you, the voters, fear a LibDem government less than a Conservative or Labour one. If you thought the LibDems could win, we'd gain 49% of the votes with the Conservatives only taking 25% and Labour 19%. Walking around the constituency, those I have spoken to liked our policies of a fairer tax system so there's no tax on the first £10,000 earned giving you an extra £700 in your pocket. They liked our policies for a fairer start for our children, investment in jobs and training in a new, sustainable green economy, and to have a fairer, cleaner political system.
Lend me your vote on Thursday, join others and do something really different.

The regional party needs to make a number of changes to its constitution. Primarily, these are the result of changes made to the English Party's Constitution in July 2009. They relate to the relationship between the party and Liberal Democrat council groups, and came into effect immediately after the General Election. In particular, regional parties have been given the task of 'recognising' Liberal Democrat groups so that they can use the party's name. The majority of the changes to our constitution are in Sections 4 and 6.

I came into politics to make a difference for the most disadvantaged in our society. It is over three years since I, as Liberal Democrat education spokesperson, championed the Pupil Premium as our flagship education policy and debated it at Conference. I never dared imagine a time when I would be unveiling it as Government policy and then actually implementing it. But this week, the Coalition Government announced that a Pupil Premium, funded from outside the schools budget, will be introduced next September. It will mean that from next year, schools taking disadvantaged children will get the additional money they need to provide them with the extra support they deserve, no matter where they are in the country. This could mean more individual tuition or catch-up classes, but it will be for the school to decide, we won't be telling headteachers how to spend the money.

"How can you possibly take on such a large financial commitment as Trident without considering the military and political implications? If fierce cuts are to be made in Britain's conventional forces, surely we have to consider whether replacing Trident can be justified. "
Sir Menzies Campbell
Response to announcement that the Ministry of Defence will be responsible for the cost of replacing Trident - 30 July
"With most of their leadership contenders claiming to back AV for a fairer voting system, it is astonishing they now wish to block the legislation to make that happen. Each and every Labour MP campaigned on a manifesto committing to a referendum. Now they have the opportunity to make this happen but have chosen to say no for opposition's sake. "
Simon Hughes MP
Comment on Labour's decision to oppose legislation for a referendum on the alternative vote - 28 July
"With more than half of ASBOs breached in 2008, this was a policy more about posturing than effective policing. Local communities know that other measures, such as Acceptable Behaviour Contracts can nip problems in the bud before they escalate. "
Co-Chair of the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Committee for Home Affairs and Justice, Tom Brake MP
Commenting on speech by the Home Secretary in which she said it was 'time to move beyond Anti Social Behaviour Orders (ASBOs) - 28 July
